Answer
Introduction
Two revolutions transformed human life: agriculture made settled civilisation possible, and industry made modern prosperity possible. Both also placed heavy and growing pressures on the environment. Understanding their costs helps us design a sustainable path for the future.
The agricultural revolutions
The Neolithic revolution about 10,000 years ago brought the clearing of forests for fields, irrigation and the domestication of animals, beginning large-scale human modification of landscapes. The Green Revolution of the 1960s introduced high-yielding varieties of wheat and rice, chemical fertilisers, pesticides and expanded irrigation. It saved millions from famine — Pakistan and India benefited greatly — but caused soil degradation, waterlogging and salinity, depletion of groundwater, pesticide pollution of water and food, loss of crop diversity and nitrogen runoff causing eutrophication. Agriculture is also a major source of methane and nitrous oxide.
The Industrial Revolution
Beginning in Britain in the late eighteenth century, industrialisation was powered by coal, later oil and gas. It brought air pollution (London's deadly smog of 1952), water pollution from factories, urbanisation with slums and waste, resource depletion, and mass production and consumption generating waste and plastics. Above all, burning fossil fuels raised atmospheric carbon dioxide from about 280 ppm to over 420 ppm, causing global warming. Industrial chemicals also created new problems such as ozone depletion from CFCs.
The Pakistani experience
Pakistan's canal irrigation system and the Green Revolution boosted food production but produced waterlogging and salinity across large areas of the Indus plains and heavy dependence on groundwater. Industrial clusters in Karachi, Faisalabad, Sialkot and Lahore discharge untreated effluents; brick kilns, vehicles and industry contribute to smog.
Lessons for sustainable development
The Brundtland Report (1987) defined sustainable development as meeting present needs without compromising future generations. Lessons include: (i) account for environmental costs — growth that destroys natural capital is not real progress; (ii) prevention is cheaper than cure, as the costs of cleaning rivers and air show; (iii) technology can help — renewable energy, efficient irrigation, integrated pest management, cleaner production; (iv) regulation and incentives such as pollution taxes and standards are essential; (v) international cooperation works, as the Montreal Protocol proved; (vi) sustainable agriculture — crop rotation, organic matter, precision farming and climate-smart practices; (vii) circular economy — reduce, reuse and recycle; and (viii) equity — the poor suffer most from environmental damage and must benefit from solutions.
Conclusion
The agricultural and industrial revolutions brought food and prosperity at the cost of soil, water, air and climate. The lesson is not to reject progress but to pursue it differently — through clean technology, wise regulation, sustainable farming and global cooperation — so that development serves both present and future generations.
