All questions carry equal marks. Answers should be precise, to the point and with clarity. Incorrect English, grammatical mistakes and wrong spellings will result in deduction of marks.
Write a short Essay of not more than 200 words on any one of the following: (20 marks) (a) Passing of NFC award with consensus of all Provinces is a symbol of our Unity and Federation. (b) Use of mother-tongue is an effective tool in learning. (c) Archaeological sites are signs of Heritage. (d) Islamic teaching of Universal brotherhood is a death blow to terrorism.
Read the following passage carefully and make précis by giving it a suitable heading: (20 marks) It has been documented that almost twelve million years ago, at the beginning of the Pliocene Age, a horse, about midway through its evolutionary development, crossed a land-bridge where the Bering Straits are now located, from Alaska into the grasslands of Europe. The horse was the hipparion, about the size of a modern-day pony with three toes and specialized cheek teeth for grazing. In Europe, the hipparion encountered another less advanced horse called the anchitheres, which had previously invaded Europe by the same route, probably during the Miocene Period. Less developed and smaller than the hipparion, the anchitheres was completely replaced by it. By the end of the Pleistocene Age both the anchitheres and the hipparion had become extinct in North America, where they had originated. In Europe they had evolved into an animal very similar to the horse as we know it today. It was the descendant of this horse that was brought by the European colonists to the Americas.
(a) Translate the following passage in Sindhi/Urdu: (10 marks) The spirit of democracy is that power belongs to the people. They select their representatives every fourth or fifth year. The majority party forms the government and selects the Prime Minister. The main flaw of this system is that only heads are counted. Their calibre is not considered. The vote of an illiterate person has the same strength as that of a scholar. It is a common experience that an influential person of an area drives the voters of his constituency at will and compels them to cast their votes in favour of a candidate of his choice. It is essential for the success of democracy that the masses should be educated and they should know the real value of their votes. As long as the masses remain illiterate, democracy would remain a plaything in the hands of a few clever people. (b) Translate the following Sindhi / Urdu passage in English: (10 marks)
(a) Do as directed: (10 marks) (i) He advised his sons not to quarrel amongst themselves when he was dead but to remain united. (Change into Direct speech) (ii) The Olympic games were being opened by the flame torched from solar rays. (Change the voice) (iii) He drove too fast for the police patrol to catch.
