2Section I — (a) (i) Define Matrix, rectangular and square matrix, scalar matrix and identity matrix. (ii) Find the inverse of the matrix [4 7; 2 6] by Adjoint method. (b) Without expansion prove that |α βγ αβγ; β γα αβγ; γ αβ αβγ| = |α α² α³; β β² β³; γ γ² γ³|. (c) Use Cramer's rule to solve the following system of three linear equations: x + 2y + z = 8, 2x − y + z = 3, x + y − z = 0.
3Section I — (a) Use mathematical induction to show that 1 + 5 + 9 + … + (4n − 3) = n(2n − 1). (b) Evaluate (3 + √2)⁴ − (3 − √2)⁴.
4Section I — (a) (i) Find the 70th term of the following Arithmetic Progression (A.P.): 1, 5, 9, 13, 15, … (ii) What term of the following G.P is 4096? 1, 4, 16, 64, 256, 1024, … (b) Find the arithmetic mean, geometric mean and harmonic mean of 8 and 4. (c) If A, G, H are respectively the arithmetic, the geometric and the harmonic means between any two given numbers, then prove that G² = AH.
5Section I — (a) Define equilateral triangle, isosceles triangle and scalene triangle. Without using table find the value of sin 60°. (b) If cos θ = 2/3 and P(θ) is in the first quadrant, find the remaining trigonometric functions. (c) Prove any two of the following identities: (i) 1 + tan²(π/4) = sec²(π/4) (ii) (sin θ − cos θ)² = 1 − 2 cos θ sin θ (iii) √(1 − sin θ) / √(1 + sin θ) = sec θ − tan θ
