  • Outline
  • 1. Introduction
  • 2. How artificial intelligence has overstepped its bounds
  • 2.1 AI is replacing human thought and creativity. (Case in point: ChatGPT writing essays; the 2023 Hollywood writers' strike)
  • 2.2 AI is threatening privacy and civil liberties. (Case in point: Clearview AI scraping billions of photos for facial recognition)
  • 2.3 AI is fabricating misinformation and psychological warfare. (Case in point: the 2022 deepfake of Zelensky "surrendering")
  • 2.4 AI is automating the decision to kill. (Case in point: the Kargu-2 drone in Libya, per a 2021 UN report)
  • 2.5 AI is displacing jobs and widening inequality. (Case in point: Goldman Sachs' 2023 estimate of millions of jobs exposed)
  • 2.6 AI is reinforcing bias and discrimination. (Case in point: Amazon's recruitment tool scrapped in 2018 for bias against women)
  • 2.7 AI is toying with human emotions. (Case in point: Replika chatbots as virtual partners)
  • 2.8 AI is concentrating power in a few corporations. (Case in point: control of advanced models by a handful of tech giants)
  • 3. Mechanisms for keeping check and balance on the limits of AI
  • 3.1 Ethical development and legal regulation can restrain AI. (Case in point: the EU AI Act)
  • 3.2 Education, awareness and human oversight can keep AI accountable.

*Artificial Intelligence has overstepped its bounds.*

Artificial Intelligence was invented to help Humanity, to make the work easier, medicine sharper and life faster. But, the servant has started to function like the master. AI is now writing, watching, persuading and even killing, all without the intervention of a human, whether in the classroom or battlefield. It is a substitute for human judgment, an invasion of privacy, the dissemination of falsehoods, the displacement of humans and the weakening of emotional bonds. Thus, Artificial Intelligence has clearly gone too far, and can only be reigned in by ethical standards, awareness and human control. Firstly, the qualities of human beings are being replaced by AI—thinking, reflecting and creating. Students and professionals are lured into giving up their own thinking by tools like ChatGPT, which generate essays, code and poetry in seconds. The 2023 Hollywood writers' strike was a case of fear of creative work being given to machines. The human mind will weaken when thinking is outsourced. Second, AI poses a threat to privacy and civil liberties. Face recognition companies like Clearview AI have taken billions of images without consent from the internet. In authoritarian countries these systems allow citizens to be constantly monitored. A free society cannot be one that is always monitored. Third, AI is creating misinformation and is conducting psychological warfare. In 2022, the fake video of Ukrainian President Zelensky begging his soldiers to surrender, for example, is a case in point. The fake video of Ukrainian President Zelensky begging his soldiers to surrender in 2022, for instance, is a prime example. As it becomes increasingly difficult to identify this synthetic content, the trust in what is seen and heard erodes, and hybrid warfare becomes more and more effective and affordable. Fourth, AI is automating the killing decision.Fourth, AI is doing away with the decision to kill. In a 2021 report, the UN stated that a Kargu-2 drone "appears to have struck human targets in Libya without any human control. Morphing to take life without moral responsibility is on a continuum that international law has not clearly marked. Fifth, AI is taking away jobs and exacerbating inequality. Weeks after the release of ChatGPT in beta, analysts like Goldman Sachs have spoiled the party for us by warning that millions of jobs could be at risk of being automated by generative AI. In Yuval Noah Harari's Homo Deus, the benefits will likely be directed towards those who own the technology, and the rest will be insecure. Sixth, AI is perpetuating bias. Algorithms are programmed with imperfect human information, so they reproduce prejudices. In 2018, Amazon dropped an experimental method of hiring which penalised women's resumes. When decisions are made by biased machines, they are made in a neutral manner, but they are in fact unjust. Seventh, AI is toying with human emotions. There are also companion applications like Replika which provide artificial companions and partners, and in South Korea, robots have been introduced as a company for the lonely. These can temporarily alleviate feelings of loneliness but can also undermine the quality of real-life relationships. Finally, AI is converging in a handful of companies, who have the data, the computing, and the latest models, and whose shareholders, not citizens, are the ones determining their priorities. But the troubles are not irreparable. First, there needs to be boundaries established through ethics and law. An example to follow is the AI Act of the European Union, which distinguishes systems according to risk and prohibits the most dangerous applications. Developers should be liable for harm and lethal autonomous weapons should be subject to international agreement. Secondly, there is a need for education and awareness. Citizens need to know how to assess information, challenge decisions made by algorithms and demand transparency, while institutions need to ensure that there is a human in the loop when making decisions that impact on life, liberty and livelihood. We live at the intersection of opportunity and danger, with humanity at the helm of a car that is driving faster than its brakes. AI can be a lamp that illuminates a way to go or a fire that burns the house. It becomes either one or the other, according not to the machine, but to the wisdom, vigilance and moral courage of those who put it to the use.
