CSS Special 2023General Science & AbilityQ. 7

In a certain country, 7% of the total workforce is employed in tourism. 24.4 million overseas visitors came to this country in 2014. 2014 was a record year for inbound tourism. This level of visitors was 3% higher than in 2013. It eclipsed the previous record of 24 million visitors recorded in 2008. In 2014 the average overseas visitor spent US$ 110 but average daily spend per visitor in 2013 was US$ 60 while in 2014, it was US$ 76.20. (A) What percentage increase in daily average amount spent occurred between 2013 and 2014? (B) How many visitors came to this country in 2013? (C) What was the approximate percentage increase on the previous record number of visitors? (D) If there are 30 m people employed in this country's workforce, how many work in the tourism sector?

This answer to the CSS Special 2023 General Science & Ability paper (Q. 7) was written by the CSS Nexus team. Read the outline first, then see how each point is developed.

Outline

  • (A) (76.20 - 60) ÷ 60: 27%
  • (B) 24.4 ÷ 1.03: about 23.69 million
  • (C) (24.4 - 24) ÷ 24: about 1.67%
  • (D) 7% of 30 million: 2.1 million

Answer

(A) Increase in daily average spending

Increase = 76.20 − 60 = US$ 16.20.

Percentage increase = (16.20 ÷ 60) × 100 = 27%.

(B) Visitors in 2013

The 2014 total of 24.4 million was 3% higher than the 2013 figure, so 24.4 million = 1.03 × (2013 visitors).

Visitors in 2013 = 24.4 ÷ 1.03 ≈ 23.69 million.

A common mistake is taking 3% of 24.4 million and subtracting it. The 3% applies to the 2013 figure, not the 2014 figure.

(C) Increase on the previous record

The previous record was 24 million, in 2008.

Increase = 24.4 − 24 = 0.4 million.

Percentage increase = (0.4 ÷ 24) × 100 ≈ 1.67%, or approximately 1.7%.

(D) Workers in tourism

Tourism employs 7% of the workforce.

Tourism workers = 7% of 30 million = 0.07 × 30 million = 2.1 million.
