Answer

Introduction

A society is only as honest as the individuals within it. Laws can punish crime, but they cannot create honesty, compassion or humility. Islam therefore begins its reform within the human being. Tazkiyah al-nafs, the purification of the self, was one of the central missions of the Prophet ﷺ and is the basis of a just society.

Meaning of self-purification

The Arabic root of tazkiyah carries two meanings: to cleanse and to grow. Self-purification therefore has two parts. A person removes from the self such vices as pride, greed and envy, and develops such virtues as sincerity, patience and gratitude. Nafs refers to the self with its desires. The goal is not to destroy desire, but to train it to follow divine guidance.

Stages of the nafs

Scholars commonly derive three stages from the Quran.

Three Stages of the Nafs

  • Ammarah: commands to evil (Yusuf 12:53)
  • Lawwamah: blames itself (Al-Qiyamah 75:2)
  • Mutma'innah: the soul at peace (Al-Fajr 89:27)

Self-purification is the journey from the first of these stages to the last.

Self-purification in the Quran

The key to success

After a series of solemn oaths, Allah declares that human success and failure depend on this inner struggle.

"He has succeeded who purifies it, and he has failed who instils it with corruption." (Ash-Shams 91:9–10)

A mission of the Prophet ﷺ

The Quran names purification among his main functions, beside reciting the verses and teaching the Book and wisdom.

"It is He who has sent among the unlettered a Messenger from themselves, reciting to them His verses, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and wisdom." (Al-Jumu'ah 62:2)

The purified heart on the Last Day

Wealth and children will be of no use then; only a sound heart will count.

"The Day when there will not benefit anyone wealth or children, but only one who comes to Allah with a sound heart." (Ash-Shu'ara 26:88–89)

Self-purification in the Sunnah

The heart as the centre

The Prophet ﷺ said that there is a piece of flesh in the body which, if sound, makes the whole body sound, and if corrupt, corrupts the whole body. It is the heart (Bukhari, Muslim).

Character as purpose

He said he was sent to perfect noble character (Muwatta Malik), and that the best among you are those with the best character (Bukhari, Muslim).

The struggle with oneself

He said that the strong person is not the one who overcomes others in wrestling, but the one who controls himself when angry (Bukhari, Muslim).

Ihsan

In the famous Hadith of Jibril, Ihsan is to worship Allah as if you see Him, and although you do not see Him, He sees you (Bukhari, Muslim). This awareness of being watched is at the heart of self-purification.

His own example

The companions, once drinkers and feuding tribesmen, became models of honesty and sacrifice in a single generation through his training. Hazrat Umar's (RA) advice to take account of yourselves before you are taken to account, as it is reported, became a guiding idea of Muslim spiritual life.

Diseases of the heart

Pride (kibr)

The Prophet ﷺ said that no one with an atom's weight of pride in his heart shall enter Paradise (Muslim).

Envy (hasad)

It consumes good deeds and sets people against each other.

Greed and love of the world

These lead to corruption and to the abuse of trusts.

Showing off (riya)

It empties worship of value (Al-Ma'un 107:4–6).

Backbiting and suspicion

The Quran compares backbiting to eating a dead brother's flesh.

"…And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it." (Al-Hujurat 49:12)

Means of self-purification

Worship

Prayer restrains wrongdoing (Al-Ankabut 29:45). Fasting teaches self-control and God-consciousness (Al-Baqarah 2:183), and Zakat treats greed (At-Tawbah 9:103).

Remembrance of Allah and the Quran

Reflecting on the Quran and regular dhikr keep the heart alert.

"…Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured." (Ar-Ra'd 13:28)

Self-examination (muhasabah)

A person reviews his actions regularly and repents sincerely.

Good company

The Quran instructs believers to stay with those who are truthful.

"O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are truthful." (At-Tawbah 9:119)

Service to others

Serving the needy breaks pride and selfishness. Imam al-Ghazali's Ihya Ulum al-Din remains the classic treatment of these practices.

Impact on society

Impact of Tazkiyah on Society

  • Honesty and less corruption
  • Peaceful family life
  • Social harmony
  • Just leadership
  • Care for the weak
  • Less crime

Honesty and less corruption

A person who feels watched by Allah does not need a supervisor. Hazrat Umar (RA) is reported to have tested a young shepherd by asking him to sell him a goat and tell its owner that a wolf had eaten it. The shepherd replied: "Then where is Allah?"

Peaceful family life

Patience, forgiveness and good character resolve most domestic conflict. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best of you is the best to his family" (Tirmidhi).

Social harmony

When envy, contempt and backbiting are reduced, sectarian and ethnic hatred lose their hold.

Just leadership

A purified leader treats power as a trust. The Rashidun Caliphs are the best example of this, for they led modest lives despite ruling great territories.

Care for the weak

A person who has overcome greed gives willingly, as the Ansar did when they shared their homes with the Muhajirun.

Less crime

External law works far better when backed by inner restraint. Pakistan has no shortage of laws, but it suffers from a shortage of people willing to obey them when no one is looking.

Common misunderstandings about self-purification

It does not mean leaving the world.

The Prophet ﷺ rejected the idea of fasting all the time and giving up marriage, and said that whoever turns from his Sunnah is not of him (Bukhari, Muslim). Purification takes place in the market and the home, not only in seclusion.

It does not make a person sinless.

Everyone errs, and the Quran invites sinners to return and not to despair of Allah's mercy (Az-Zumar 39:53).

It is not a claim to superiority.

The Quran warns: "Do not claim yourselves to be pure" (An-Najm 53:32). Anyone who boasts of his own purity has missed the point.

It needs no paid intermediary.

Good teachers help, but no person can sell salvation to another, and each individual answers for himself (Al-An'am 6:164). Exploitation in the name of spirituality is itself a disease of the heart.

Conclusion

Self-purification means cleansing the self of vice and growing in virtue. The Quran makes it the condition of success and a central mission of the Prophet ﷺ, while the Sunnah gives practical means through worship, remembrance, self-examination and good company. Its social effects include honesty, family peace, harmony and just leadership. Reform in Pakistan should not rely on laws alone, as the most lasting reform begins within each individual.
