Answer

Introduction

Tauheed is the first and most fundamental belief of Islam. All the prophets called people to it, and it is the first part of the declaration of faith: La ilaha illallah, there is no god but Allah. It is not merely a theological statement. It changes how a person sees himself, other people, power, wealth and death, and it provides the foundation for the entire Islamic social order.

Definition of Tauheed

Linguistically, Tauheed comes from wahhada, meaning to make one or to affirm as one. Technically, it means to believe that Allah is One in His essence, attributes and actions, and that He alone deserves worship.

"Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent." (Al-Ikhlas 112:1–4)

Kinds of Tauheed

Kinds of Tauheed

  • Rububiyyah: Allah alone creates, sustains and governs
  • Uluhiyyah: Allah alone is worshipped
  • Asma wa Sifat: His names and attributes are unique

Tauheed al-Rububiyyah (Lordship)

Allah alone is the Creator, Sustainer and Controller of the universe. Even the Makkan polytheists accepted much of this, but it did not save them from error.

Tauheed al-Uluhiyyah (Worship)

All worship, prayer, sacrifice, vows and ultimate obedience belong to Allah alone. This was the main point of dispute between the prophets and their people.

Tauheed al-Asma wa al-Sifat (Names and Attributes)

Allah's names and attributes are unique, and no creature fully shares them. This classification was developed by later scholars for teaching purposes, and others classify the subject differently, but the core belief is shared by all Muslims.

Opposite of Tauheed: Shirk

Shirk means associating partners with Allah. It may be open, as in idol worship, or subtle, as in showing off in worship, or in treating wealth, power or desire as one's ultimate master. The Quran calls it the gravest sin.

"Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills." (An-Nisa 4:48)

Rational and Quranic arguments

The order of the universe

A single, consistent order in nature points to one will.

"Had there been within the heavens and earth gods besides Allah, they both would have been ruined." (Al-Anbiya 21:22)

The nature of God

A being who depends on another, or who is limited, cannot be God. The Ayat al-Kursi presents Allah as ever-living and self-sustaining.

"Allah: there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence." (Al-Baqarah 2:255)

The call of all prophets

Every nation was told the same message.

"And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, saying: Worship Allah and avoid false gods." (An-Nahl 16:36)

Impact on individual life

1. Dignity and self-respect

One who bows only to Allah will not bow before any human being, whether a ruler, landlord or official. As Iqbal wrote, the one prostration that you find so burdensome frees you from a thousand others.

2. Freedom from fear

Since benefit and harm lie ultimately with Allah, the believer is freed from the fear of people, and from superstition. The Quran promises security to those who keep their faith pure.

"They who believe and do not mix their belief with injustice, those will have security, and they are rightly guided." (Al-An'am 6:82)

3. Humility

Since all abilities are gifts from Allah, there is no basis for arrogance. Bowing before Him daily reminds a person of this.

4. Purpose and unity of personality

Life has a single aim, to please Allah, so a person does not need to live with one standard at home and another at work.

"Say: Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds." (Al-An'am 6:162)

5. Patience and contentment

A person trusts Allah in hardship and is grateful in ease. The Prophet ﷺ told Ibn Abbas (RA) that if the whole world gathered to benefit or harm him, it could do so only as Allah had written (Tirmidhi).

6. Moral responsibility

Knowing that the One God sees everything strengthens a person against sin in private.

7. Courage and optimism

Believers do not despair, since Allah's mercy and power are unlimited. This gave the early Muslims great courage in adversity.

Impact on society

Tauheed and Society

  • Equality of mankind
  • Brotherhood
  • Justice and rule of law
  • Limits on power
  • Freedom from exploitation
  • Universal outlook

1. Equality

One Creator means one human family. Differences of race, tribe and class lose their claim to superiority. Hajj displays this visibly, with king and labourer dressed alike.

"O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul." (An-Nisa 4:1)

2. Brotherhood and unity

One God, one Book and one Qiblah create a shared identity among believers across nations.

3. Justice and rule of law

If everyone is equally a servant of Allah, the law must apply to all. Rulers, like the people they govern, are under divine law.

4. Limits on power

Ultimate sovereignty belongs to Allah, so no ruler may claim absolute authority. Pakistan's Objectives Resolution expresses this idea by declaring that sovereignty belongs to Allah alone, and that authority is a sacred trust.

"…Judgement belongs to none but Allah…" (Yusuf 12:40)

5. Freedom from exploitation

Slavery to wealth, priests, feudal lords and false saints is rejected in principle. Tauheed thus has a liberating social message. Exploiting people through superstition or false claims of spiritual power conflicts with it directly.

6. Stewardship of wealth and nature

Everything belongs to Allah, and people are His trustees. Wealth must be earned and spent lawfully, and nature should not be destroyed.

7. Universal outlook

A believer in the Lord of all the worlds cannot limit moral concern to his own tribe or nation.

Tauheed and the modern world

Modern forms of shirk are less obvious than idols. They include treating money, nationalism, political leaders or one's own desires as supreme. The Quran speaks of one who takes his own desire as his god (Al-Furqan 25:43). Meanwhile, Pakistani society still suffers from superstition, grave-related excesses and blind personality cults, all of which contradict true Tauheed. The remedy is education that presents Tauheed as a source of dignity and responsibility, and not merely as a matter for theological argument.

Conclusion

Tauheed is the belief that Allah alone is the Lord and deserves all worship, and that His names and attributes are unique. For the individual, it gives dignity, freedom from fear, humility, purpose and accountability. For society, it establishes equality, brotherhood, justice and limits on power. It is therefore not merely the first article of faith, but also the root from which a just social order grows. Pakistan needs this belief as a living force, in its offices and markets as well as in its mosques.
