Answer

Introduction

The Shahadah has two parts: there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah. The second part shows that belief in God alone is not sufficient in Islam; one must also accept the way in which He has chosen to guide humanity. Risalat, or Prophethood, links the Creator with creation, and turns belief into a practical way of life.

The doctrine of Prophethood

Meaning and mission

A prophet is a human being chosen by Allah to receive revelation and to guide others. The Quran describes their tasks as giving good news and warning, teaching the scripture and establishing justice.

"Mankind was one community, then Allah sent the prophets as bringers of good tidings and warners, and sent down with them the Scripture in truth to judge between the people." (Al-Baqarah 2:213)

Mission of the Prophets

  • Call to Tauheed
  • Convey revelation
  • Teach and purify
  • Establish justice
  • Serve as living models
  • Warn about the Hereafter

Characteristics

Prophets are human, truthful, trustworthy, wise and protected by Allah from major sin. They receive revelation, and they do not speak from their own desire (An-Najm 53:3–4). They are not divine, and the Quran stresses this repeatedly.

Belief in all prophets

A Muslim believes in all prophets, without distinction as to their prophethood (Al-Baqarah 2:285). The Quran names twenty-five, including Ibrahim, Musa and Isa (AS), but states that others were also sent. This universalism means Islam regards earlier faiths as sharing a common source.

"And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, saying: Worship Allah and avoid false gods." (An-Nahl 16:36)

Finality

Muhammad ﷺ is the last prophet, whose message is for all people and all times. The Quran has been preserved, and his Sunnah is well documented. Muslims of all schools regard this as essential to their faith.

"Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the seal of the prophets. And ever is Allah, of all things, Knowing." (Al-Ahzab 33:40)

"Say: O mankind, indeed I am the Messenger of Allah to you all." (Al-A'raf 7:158)

Need for Prophethood

Reason has limits

Human reason has achieved a great deal, but it cannot by itself reach certainty about Allah's attributes or life after death, and it has often justified terrible acts, including slavery and racism. Imam al-Ghazali noted that intellect needs guidance from revelation, as the eye needs light.

Desire distorts judgement

People often use reason to justify what they already want. Moral guidance from outside human interests provides a fixed standard.

A human model

A book needs someone to explain and demonstrate it. Hazrat Aishah (RA) said of the Prophet ﷺ: "His character was the Quran" (Muslim).

"There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern…" (Al-Ahzab 33:21)

Divine justice

Allah does not punish people until the message has reached them.

"Messengers as bringers of good tidings and warners so that mankind will have no argument against Allah after the messengers." (An-Nisa 4:165)

Importance in human life

1. Spiritual importance

Prophets show how to know and worship Allah, and they free human beings from worshipping idols, stars, kings or their own desires. This restores human dignity, for a person who bows only to Allah bows to nobody else.

2. Moral importance

They set a clear standard of right and wrong. The Prophet ﷺ described his mission in these terms: "I was sent only to perfect noble character" (Muwatta Malik).

"And indeed, you are of a great moral character." (Al-Qalam 68:4)

3. Intellectual importance

Prophets taught people to reflect. The first word of the Quran was "Read", and this revelation ended much superstition in Arabia, and helped to give rise to a culture of learning.

"Just as We have sent among you a Messenger from yourselves, reciting to you Our verses, purifying you, and teaching you the Book and wisdom." (Al-Baqarah 2:151)

4. Social importance

They taught human equality, the rights of women, orphans, neighbours and the enslaved, and the unity of mankind. The Prophet ﷺ turned warring tribes into a brotherhood. Musa (AS) stood up to Pharaoh to free his people, and Shu'ayb (AS) condemned fraud in trade.

5. Political importance

Prophets opposed tyranny, and they showed a model of just rule. The Madinah state rested on written agreement, consultation and accountability, and it brought the rule of law to a tribal society.

"We have already sent Our messengers with clear evidences and sent down with them the Scripture and the balance that the people may maintain justice." (Al-Hadid 57:25)

6. Economic importance

Through the prohibition of riba, the institution of Zakat and fair trading rules, the Prophet ﷺ gave a framework for economic justice.

7. Purpose and hope

Prophets explain why people exist, and where they are going. This gives life meaning, helps people bear hardship and guards against despair.

8. Unity of humankind

All prophets carried one message. This gives Muslims a common ground with other faiths and supports peaceful dialogue.

Authority of the Sunnah today

Belief in the Prophet ﷺ means obeying him.

"He who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah." (An-Nisa 4:80)

"Say: If you should love Allah, then follow me, and Allah will love you." (Aal-e-Imran 3:31)

Some modern thinkers wish to rely upon the Quran alone, but without the Sunnah, we would not know how to pray or give Zakat. On the other hand, scholars distinguish between what he did as a prophet, and what he did as a person of his time and place, such as his choice of food and clothing, as is suggested by the hadith on pollinating palm trees (Muslim).

A challenge for Pakistan

Article 2-A of the Constitution, and the belief in the finality of Prophethood, are part of Pakistan's public identity. Yet honesty, kindness, justice, patience and fair treatment, the actual practice of the Prophet ﷺ, are often missing. Some claim to act in defence of his honour through mob violence, which contradicts his forgiving character. Love for him should be seen in how we deal with others.

Conclusion

Prophethood is the doctrine that Allah guided humanity through chosen human messengers, ending with Muhammad ﷺ. It is needed since reason alone cannot provide certain moral and spiritual guidance, and since people need a living example. It is the source of right belief, of morality, of knowledge, of justice and of purpose in human life. Its value will be realised in Pakistan and in the wider Ummah, when belief in him shapes how people live, and not only what they say.
