Every question from the paper, as set in the exam.

Assistant Engineer (Civil) BPS-17, Public Health Engineering Department (2014) — Surveying. Competitive examination for the post of Assistant Engineer (Civil) BPS-17 in PHED, Government of Sindh · Friday 24 January 2014, 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm · Max marks 100. Attempt any five questions.

  1. 1Fill in the blanks: (20) (i) A steel tape was standardized to 100.04 feet at 65 degrees. Today it is 75 degrees. What is the length of the tape today? (ii) From point A to point B you tape out 114.77' and you tape in (from B to A) 114.91'. What is the ratio of error? Is this acceptable for a steel tape? (iii) You take a backsight of 9.45 to a benchmark of elevation 876.99. What is the height of the instrument? (iv) What was the range pole used for in the profile levelling exercise? (v) You have just turned a double angle and measured the following values: 1st angle 58°36'44"; 1st + 2nd angle 117°13'14". What is the average angle? (vi) Convert the following bearing to azimuth: N 38° E. (vii) You have just completed a stadia measurement and obtained: top reading = 6.32, bottom reading = 4.67, zenith angle = 83°20'. A. What is the horizontal distance? B. What is the difference in elevation? (viii) You are using a map with a scale of 1:15000. Using this map, one inch equals how many feet? (ix) The contour interval on the map is 13 feet. You measure a horizontal distance of 675 feet over an area that passes 10 contour lines. What is the slope %? (x) To measure 70' suspended with a tape that requires 20 lbs/100' suspended, the tension would be ____ lbs.

  2. 2(a) Explain the "Uses of Surveying". (10) (b) The distance between two stations was 1200 m when measured with a 30 m tape. The same distance when measured with a 50 m tape was found to be 1195 m. If the 30 m tape was 0.05 m too long, what was the error in the 50 m chain? (10)

  3. 3(a) Define the following terms: (i) True Meridian (ii) Azimuth (iii) Magnetic Meridian (iv) Magnetic bearing. (08) (b) The following are the bearings of a closed traverse. Calculate the interior angles of the traverse. (12) AB: F.B N 45°30' E, B.B S 45°30' W BC: F.B S 60°0' E, B.B N 60°0' W CD: F.B S 10°30' W, B.B N 10°30' E DA: F.B N 75°45' W, B.B S 75°45' E

  4. 4The following consecutive readings were taken with a dumpy level along a chain line at a common interval of 15 m. The first reading was at a chainage of 165 m where the RL is 98.085. The instrument was shifted after the fourth and ninth readings: 3.150, 2.245, 1.125, 0.860, 3.125, 2.760, 1.835, 1.470, 1.965, 1.225, 2.390 and 3.035 m. Rule a page of your notebook in the form of a level book page, enter the above readings and find the RL of all the points by (1) the collimation system and (2) the rise-and-fall system. Apply the usual checks. (20)

  5. 5What is triangulation? Explain the difference between Compass and Abney level. Also explain the most accurate method of measuring distance along sloping ground. (20)

  6. 6Explain the methods of tacheometry and also derive the expressions for horizontal and vertical distances in the fixed hair method when the staff is held normal to the line of sight and the measured angle is one of elevation. (20)

  7. 7(a) Compare the Trapezoidal rule and Prismoidal rule of computation of volume of embankment. (08) (b) Data for a three level section of a road are as follows (side height / distance from centre line): (12) Station 1: Left +0.95 / 5.25; Centre +1.00 / 0; Right +2.55 / 7.50 Station 2: Left +1.35 / 4.75; Centre +1.5 / 0; Right +2.80 / 8.10 The width of cutting at formation level is 9 m and the side slope is 1:1. The stations are 60 m apart. Calculate the volume of cutting.

  8. 8(a) What is Theodolite traversing? Explain the direct method of measuring horizontal angle. (10) (b) Explain any two of the following methods of traversing: (a) Included angle method (b) Deflection angle method (c) Fast angle method. (10)
