Assistant Engineer (Civil) BPS-17, Public Health Engineering Department (2014) — Water Supply and Sanitary Engineering. Competitive examination for the post of Assistant Engineer (Civil) BPS-17 in PHED, Government of Sindh · Friday 24 January 2014, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm · Max marks 100. Attempt any five questions.

  1. 1(i) What are the advantages of a successful water supply project? (05) (ii) Give an outline for a typical report of any water supply scheme. (10) (iii) Distinguish between continuous water supply system and intermittent water supply system. (05)

  2. 2(i) What is break point chlorination and residual chlorination? (05) (ii) Role of Intake in water distribution system. Explain River Intake. (05) (iii) Discuss the Dead end Method of layout of distribution system and also discuss water losses. (10)

  3. 3(i) What are the factors to be considered before making selection of the material for sewers? (05) (ii) What are the requirements of a good sewer-joint? (05) (iii) Describe how the solid waste is collected and removed. (10)

  4. 4(i) What are the functional elements of Solid Waste Management? (05) (ii) Explain in detail Integrated waste management focusing on the 4 Rs. (10) (iii) Define a disposal option: Landfill design and its location. (05)

  5. 5(a) Discuss the different physical and chemical tests for determining the suitability of drinking water. (10) (b) State the permissible limits for the following in drinking water: (i) Turbidity (ii) Chlorides (iii) Nitrates (iv) Hardness (v) Fluorides. (10)

  6. 6(a) Explain the composition of sewage and also the possible methods of measuring the strength of sewage. Write out the laboratory procedure of the experiment to determine the strength of sewage. (10) (b) Describe the aerobic and anaerobic cycles that take part in stabilization of organic matter in nature. (10)

  7. 7(a) Describe the various methods of distribution of water employed in a municipal water supply scheme. (10) (b) A dead end type of distribution network has been adopted for supplying water to a certain zone of the city having different blocks and their population as shown. The average rate of water supply is 150 lpcd. Design the sizes of the distribution network with the following assumptions: (10) (i) The R.L. of the bottom of the storage tank may be assumed as 230.00 m. (ii) The R.L. points along the road be taken as A – 210.00 m, B – 200.00 m and C – 198.00 m. (iii) The lengths of AB and BC may be taken as 600 m and 450 m respectively. (iv) The distribution system may be designed for maximum demand equal to 2.5 times the average demand. (v) The minimum pressure head to be maintained at any point in the distribution network may be assumed as 12 m. (vi) Use the Hazen-Williams formula for estimation of head loss. (The block populations shown on the paper are not reproduced in the source scan.)

  8. 8(a) Describe Landfill methods. Classify solid waste on the basis of generation sources and define their heterogeneous components. (10) (b) Calculate the area of the landfill for the city having the following particulars: (10) (i) Population = 10,000 persons (ii) Solid waste generation rate = 0.50 kg/capita/day (iii) Density of the waste = 250 kg/m³ (iv) Solid waste is to be landfilled for 10 years (v) Depth of landfill = 10 metres (vi) Assume 15% of overall depth as clay cover
