Describe the role of water infra-structure in managing sustainable flow of water in rivers and how it helps in facing the problems of Flood disasters and water scarcity management. (20)
After how many days will an irrigator supply water to soil (clay loam) in order to ensure sufficient irrigation of a given crop if: (20) (i) Field Capacity (FC) = 27% (ii) Permanent Wilting Point (PWP) = 14% (iii) Specific Weight of Soil (γ) = 1.5 g/cm³ (iv) Effective Depth of root zone (d) = 75 cm (v) Consumptive use of crop (Cu) = 11 mm/day (vi) Depletion (p) = 80%
(a) What is meant by "Drainage coefficient" and how does it help in determining the sizes of tile drains? (10) (b) Determine the size at the outlet of a 6 hectare drainage system, if the Drainage Coefficient is 1 cm and the tile grade is 0.3%. Assume the roughness coefficient for tile material as 0.011. (10)
(a) What are the main objectives of land drainage? (08) (b) A Gross catchment area of a drain is 55 square miles; the non-contributing area is 5 square miles due to embankment of railway track. The inlet time is 2 hours and length 5000 feet; interception losses are ¼ inch and cultivated area is 30%. Assume slope 1/2500. Determine the discharge in the drain. (12) Note: Banjar area (non-cultivable) whole contributing; Canal irrigated equal to 10% of Banjar area; Barani is equal to 80% of Banjar area.
Discuss the factors affecting the crop growth and yield. (20)
Give the types of losses in channels and discuss the factors on which they depend. (20)
What is soil water potential? Also discuss soil water movement in the light of Darcy's law. (20)
Explain salt balance of irrigated lands mathematically. Also derive equation for leaching requirement. (20)
