Every question from the paper, as set in the exam.

Assistant Engineer / Assistant Executive Engineer (Civil) BPS-17, Engineers Cadre CCE (2011) — Theory of Structures & Steel Structure. Combined Competitive Examination for Engineers Cadre · Monday 28 March 2011, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm · Max marks 100. Attempt any 05 questions. All questions carry equal marks. Figures in the paper are described in words.

  1. 1A cross section of truss for a workshop roof is shown in the figure. By using method of joints or method of sections, determine the forces in the members AC, BC, BD and EF. Figure: bottom chord A–C–E–F with AC = 15 ft, CE = 15 ft and EF = 10 ft; pin support at A and roller at F. Verticals BC = 20 ft and DE = 15 ft; members AB, BD, CD and DF. Loads of 400 lb at C and 1400 lb at E.

  2. 2Discuss the importance of Grillage Foundation. Design the Upper Tier of a Two Tier grillage footing for a column that transmits an axial load of 290 tons to a steel grillage. The base plate of the column is square having dimension of 28 in × 28 in. The bearing capacity of soil is 2.15 tons/ft². Take allowable bending stress equal to 14 tons/in².

  3. 3(a) Describe the importance of Steel Structures in Global and Pakistan Construction Industry. (b) Describe various loads which are considered in the design of Steel Structures. Discuss Earthquake load in detail and explain the earthquake load equation F = ZIKCSW.

  4. 4Explain with neat sketches fabrication and erection methods of structural steel members used in steel structures.

  5. 5Design a suitable base and anchor bolts for a column subjected to an axial load of 500 kN and a wind moment of 175 kNm. Also design the welded connection between the column and base. The safe bearing pressure of concrete may be assumed equal to 4000 kN/m².

  6. 6A simply supported beam having 15 ft span supports a uniformly distributed load of 1500 lbs/ft and a point load of 10000 lbs at the mid span. Calculate the maximum bending moment in the beam. Also determine the magnitude of shear force at the supports and mid span.

  7. 7A lintel of a doorway having span "L" ft carries the weight of brick masonry. The total weight of the masonry above the lintel is "W" lbs. Calculate the maximum bending moment and maximum shear force for the following two cases: (a) if the load of masonry is considered as rectangular; (b) if the load of masonry is considered as triangular.
