The Provincial Management Service (PMS) exam is held by the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC), as part of its Combined Competitive Examination, to recruit officers for the Government of Punjab. It has compulsory and optional written papers followed by an interview. It is similar to CSS in style, but its compulsory papers are different — most importantly it has an Urdu paper and a General Knowledge paper.
Punjab PMS is not the same as KP-PMS: the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa exam has a different set of compulsory papers (see our KP-PMS guide).
Eligibility rules, age limits, fees and dates change from year to year, so always check the latest official notice from the PPSC before you apply.
Compulsory papers
Every candidate takes these six papers (names as PPSC uses them on its date sheet and question papers):
- English Essay
- English (Précis, Comprehension & Translation)
- Urdu (Essay, Précis, Comprehension & Translation)
- Pakistan Studies — subjective and objective parts
- Islamic Studies, or Ethics for non-Muslim candidates — subjective and objective parts
- General Knowledge
Optional subjects
Optional subjects are arranged by PPSC in groups A to G, and each optional subject has two papers (Paper-I and Paper-II). The groups cover commerce, economics and administration; agriculture and the life sciences; mathematics, statistics, computer science and engineering; physics, chemistry, geology and geography; political science, history, law and mass communication; philosophy, psychology, sociology and social work; and languages and literature (English, Urdu, Arabic, Persian, Punjabi) and education.
PPSC sets how many optional subjects you take and limits you to subjects from different groups, so check the current rules before choosing.
How to prepare
- Read the PMS past papers of the last five to ten years for every compulsory and optional subject.
- Treat the Urdu paper as seriously as English: it has an essay, précis, comprehension and translation.
- Prepare the objective parts of Pakistan Studies and Islamic Studies, and General Knowledge, with regular MCQ practice.
- Follow Punjab-specific affairs (governance, economy, agriculture, local government) as well as national issues.
- Write timed answers and compare them with model answers.
